Our alumni do awesome things, so it’s a pleasure for me to keep in touch with many of them. This past spring I got an email from a guy named Ezra, who participated in a summer program a while back. He has since received a bachelor’s degree, worked as a teacher, and had many other adventures. In the email he explained that he had spent last winter building a wood canvas canoe, and that he was soon to embark with it on the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, a water trail from Old Forge, New York to Fort Kent, Maine (740 miles).
On or recent trip on the Allagash, we were camped at Round Pond when who should paddle by but Ezra, with his dad in the bow. He was in the final stretch of his NFCT expedition. We chatted for a few minutes, took a few photos, and they were off before a line of thunder storms hit us. He recognized our green canoes and poles.
It was one of the happy bits of trail magic we enjoyed on our recent month on the water. Congratulations to Ezra for the beautiful canoe, the trip, and the spirit of adventure you bring to the people you meet. You’re a great inspiration to people to get out and explore this world.

It was great to see you guys out in your element, and such a pleasant surprise to see a familiar face! I hope that the rest of the trip went well for you guys. We had low water until the St John, but from there it was smooth sailing!
