It’s Not About The Skills

The number of primitive skills and survival schools has swelled in the last few years, and while all schools are not created equal there are many opportunities to learn wilderness skills these days.  It’s important to be clear about what we do because it’s different than what’s available elsewhere.  Yes, we teach skills.  We’re among the most experienced in north America teaching them.  But we teach them in order to facilitate an authentic wilderness experience for our students.  So while the skills are important, they’re the means, not the end.

Learning wilderness skills is important and empowering.  But using those skills in the wilderness for an extended period of time is exponentially more empowering and can change your life.

“Only intimate and rather prolonged contact with the wilds seem to allow any significant revelation of its inner secrets.” – Calvin Rutstrum
