Years ago I pulled the trigger on a 17” Maca dutch oven (seen in the photo above). It’s big, deep, heavy (29 quarts, 67 pounds empty), and has fed countless big groups at the field school. Maca made a name for themselves with their large-capacity dutch ovens. If you wanted to feed an army, a Maca dutch oven was your go-to tool. It was with great sadness that I read the news in May, 2013 that they had stopped production on their line of dutch ovens. I had listened to Whiskey Jack and Brock Dangerman talk for hours on at least 17 occasions about saving up the money to buy the 22” Maca DO (45 quarts, 160 pounds empty), and it looked like it was never to be.
Flash forward to two weeks ago. Working off a tip I received on our dutch oven hotline, I went to the website for an outfit that used to carry Maca ovens; ahappycamper.com. It seems that they are now special ordering Maca ovens, a few at a time. Not trusting the ‘internets’, I gave them a call to confirm, and it’s true. Maca ovens are available again.
Here’s the link to the Maca DO page at ahappycamper.com: https://ahappycamper.com/product/maca-22-inch-deep-cast-iron-camp-dutch-oven-29-qt/
Now I need to figure out how to order more cast iron cookware, including a massive, $400+, 22” dutch oven that will take a few people to move, without my wife finding out. Wish me luck!
