It’s been ten years since Brian Kevin’s article The Survivors, about military veterans attending the Wilderness Bushcraft Semester, was published in DownEast Magazine. Of all the media coverage we’ve had over the years, this article is my favorite. The author came and camped with us, got to know the people he was writing about, and captured the essence of the transformation many of them were going through. It is something we continue to see on our long programs; people transitioning to a life after the military and trying to find their footing in the civilian world. Thankfully we’re not at war as much as back in those days, although there are still many challenges these young people face.
I can happily say I’ve stayed in touch with many of those mentioned in the article. Two of the guys will be joining me on the Rio Grande canoe expedition in March, and I speak to a few others regularly.
