Our new online course, Foundations Of Outdoor Cooking (Cooking 401), is live on our community platform at BushcraftSchool.com. Currently there are three lessons available, with a few more ready to go. The plan is to release five lessons per week, with a total of around 30 lessons.
The goal of the course is to provide an introduction into style of cooking we employ at the field school, as well as to get people familiar with the tools they will use when off the grid by using them in their kitchen at home.
The impetus for this course has been watching people who don’t cook at home have great difficulty feeding themselves at the field school. It is more work to cook outdoors than in a modern kitchen. So I wanted to put together a series of lessons training them to make some basic things at home. This way, when they arrive at the field school, the biggest variable will be transitioning their pre-existing skills and experience to cooking over a fire. I have found that to learn cooking from scratch over a fire results in lots of burned food, unappetizing meals and trips to the nearby takeout restaurants. I aim to solve this problem with the current course.
When this course is completed I can see a series of specific courses on the many aspects of outdoor cooking, but this course is a generalist approach.
