We’re in the middle of week one on the summer, 2024 Wilderness Bushcraft Semester and we’ve got a heat wave sitting over us. We’ve begun our coursework on understanding the weather and are currently looking at the impacts of weather on human behavior and energy levels. Yesterday the temperature was around 95 degrees F. Today is forecast to be a little hotter. I know that today’s weather will be a challenge for people to stay with it mentally and maintain a decent energy level. In thinking about what we can do as instructors to mitigate these challenges, we decided to spend most of the day in the shade by the river. This way our daily tasks can be regularly interspersed with swims in the cool waters of the Aroostook.
The photo is from our trip last week on the Bonaventure river in Quebec. It is one of the clearest rivers I have ever seen. This picture was shot on the lower river, and you can see how it can give you the sensation of flying as you are floating down it. We all swam on the trip, and the water was clear and cold. I bet it would feel extra-refreshing on a 100 degree day. Stay cool and hydrated out there.
