It takes a very special relationship to be gone a good part of the year while the partner is running things full time at home even though you try to be 100%. Secondly, get a copy of Merrick’s other book “Northern Nurse” about his wife Kay. She seems to be the stronger of the two and didn’t try to poke her eye out, shoot herself or come close to cutting her toe off while at the same time kept them fed, ran a trap line and was the better shot. Sam
I agree 100% about relationships. I admit that I haven’t read Northern Nurse, but it’s always been on my list. I’ll start looking harder for it now. Elliot did have quite the time on that trip with all the mishaps you mention. But I love that he was honest about them. I feel that in today’s culture, people would leave out the parts where they screwed up and only describe their successes. Maybe the ego has grown since the 1930’s, but I find his willingness to admit his defeats, the honesty, one of the things that keeps drawing me back to it. Thanks for the comment Sam.
