I made some sourdough bread in a frying pan the other day when I had some company (friends who were coming up to the county to canoe). I had a piece leftover, about 8” by 8” and two inches thick. After it sat out for a few days I grabbed it on my way out the door and flung it into the trees for the critters. This morning I woke up and what do I see? Eddy Raven grabbed the whole thing in his beak and flew into the middle of the field to eat. He must have hurt his neck because it was a big piece of hard bread. I had no idea he could fly off with the whole thing. Those birds are always up to something.
They have a nest full of baby ravens who are well behaved; they wait quietly until Buddy and Eddy (mom and dad) fly back to the nest with something to eat. Then it gets really loud for a bit. Two days ago Buddy chased off another adult raven with a lot of scolding and a close fly-by of the perch where the interloper was sitting. Their nest is in the top of a big white pine about 12 feet from my house, so in some respects we’re like an extended, mixed family.
It is sunny and warm here today, and we’re headed out on the river to paddle from Masardis to Ashland. It’s an easy sell for the group because I told them we take off the river right by the ice cream/takeout food place. If only all ideas were such an easy sell.
Picture above is of our outdoor oven that we often cook pizza and bread in, although the previously mentioned loaf was cooked on a stove.
