After a few wind, rain and cold delays, we finally made it out onto Scopan lake, the largest body of water in the entire greater Masardis metropolitan region. With newly carved and sealed paddles, our crew started learning the ins and outs of navigating large bodies of water by canoe. We start with a few balance exercises, then move right into our steering strokes so that they can control which way the canoe is facing. Then we’re right into our traveling strokes. We’ve refined our teaching methods and outline for basic canoe skills over the years, and it diverges significantly from the mainstream. Paddling and poling are of equal importance; it is never one or the other as if you could choose only one. They complement each other and are used in different water depths and under different circumstances. It is an accelerated course of study with the stated goal of getting them ready for a remote expedition in as short of a time as possible.
